I’m not a big fan of malling as I don’t believe in wasting time, money and energy on buying unnecessary things. But I do enjoy going to the shopping malls in Manila these days if only because I enjoyed looking at the striking images presented at the World Press Photo Exhibition – which was organized by the ACFJ and will run until August 23.

The exhibit shows the winning photos in the annual World Press Contest, the international competition for news and features photography, run by the World Press Photo since 1952. This is dubbed as the most prestigious annual press photography contest in the world, with more than five thousand photographers all over the world participating every year.

American photographer Anthony Suau received The Photo of the Year. Suau’s black and white photo, (which you can see somewhere in this page) shows an armed police officer cautiously clearing a foreclosed home in Cleveland, Ohio. “The image is an ominous one. A new kind of war, a war of economics, has arrived to invade our lives and our homes,” said the lead juror, American photojournalist Mary Ann Golon. (this was quoted from a press release issued by the ACFJ).

(The other photo in this page – the one with the running model won first prize in the Arts and Entertainment Singles and taken by
Giulio Di Sturco, Italy for Agenzia Grazia Neri).

Although I did I did dabble in photography, I’m really not in the position to say what is or what is not a good photojournalism. But as an observer and a journalist, I enjoyed looking at the photos in the exhibit because of the many emotions that evoked within me – all at the same time . I was disturbed, awed, felt a sense of loss, escape and hope.

***
I have posted here some of my favorite winning photos in the exhibit . So if you have time, please drop by in Mall of Asia and for once, stop buying things and start experiencing instead.

Cleveland, Ohio March 26, 2008 Delivering warning and final eviction notices Detective Robert Kole of the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department enters every situation with caution. When the residents are at the home he must assure that all is final and that the home is clear of weapons and that the residents are indeed moving out. If no one is there, then he must authorize that the door be forcibly open. He then enters and clears the house at gunpoint in hopes that there are no squatters or inhabitants threaten himself or the movers. He also clears the house for weapons. All emotions and fears are on the surface as some residents greet him by crying on his shoulder while others can threaten him with a weapon.
